Urth Caffe doesn’t play games

Despite the rise of a ton of new specialty coffee options, Urth Caffe continues to expand at precisely their own rate. The company is seemingly immune to the increased pressures of their persisting locations, with the outlets along Melrose, in Pasadena, and Beverly Hills as busy as ever.

Now comes news that Urth has at least two more locations on lockdown, including one in Orange County. The Daily Breeze is reporting also that Urth is in for a new standalone spot in Hawthorne, which is drawing fresh eyeballs thanks to SpaceX and the likes of new spots such as Los Angeles Ale Works. Indeed, there is no slowing down Urth Caffe, no matter how many hip coffee shops (or lawsuits) you throw at them.

  • Friday brunch anyone?

Nighthawk Breakfast Bar is adding a Friday brunch starting tomorrow, with hours from 11 a.m to 6 p.m. You’ll also be able to get this awesome Lucky Charms drink, so that’s a win.

  • What Pok Pok meant

LA Magazine rolls through with their own take on the Pok Pok’s upcoming closure, noting many of the same factors that Eater LA witnessed as being harbingers of the restaurant’s demise. Still, as the piece notes, it’s hard to see the place go down.

  • BOA does burgers

BOA Steakhouse is expanding into the burger game in Santa Monica and West Hollywood, with a new lunch offering that includes a bunch of burgers and a generally overhauled bar menu (including happy hour). One of the burgers is actually tuna, and has ramen on it, while the rest hew a little closer to home (bulgogi-marinated dry-aged beef, say, or a short rib patty melt). Lunch only at those two locations.

  • Hooray for Hudson House

This coming Sunday, Hudson House in Redondo Beach — co-owned by Top Chef winner Brooke Williamson and chef husband Nick Roberts — is celebrating eight years in business with a big backyard beach party. Swing down for some grub, or just to give your congratulations on a job well done.

  • Party at Brennan’s

Despite the upcoming changing of the guard at Westside Irish bar Brennan’s, the party continues. Check out the below video from ABC7 to see just how hard everyone is going this morning for St. Patrick’s Day.

  • Another North Italia

Santa Monica is getting its own North Italia casual chain restaurant, according to Toddrickallen. The 2nd Street address is still a ways off, but construction is moving quickly.

  • Robbery gone wrong

A man is in custody in Hawthorne after allegedly robbing several folks outside of a Denny’s. Police were able to apprehend the man around 3 a.m. after one of the victims reportedly ran him over with their car following the robbery, resulting in the assailant shooting himself in the head. He was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.

  • Fleishik’s is doing well

Here’s the line from a couple of days ago at Fleishik’s, Eric Greenspan’s new kosher sandwich shop in Beverly Grove. The place has been an immediate hit, selling out of food every single day thanks to an underserved clientele of young, modern kosher diners who want something more interesting than the the stodgier old Jewish delis around town. Expect those lines for a while.
